Russian alphabet pronunciation: Cyrillic false friends

Cyrillic becomes much easier once you stop asking what a letter looks like and start retrieving the sound it represents. Three deceptive letters are enough to make that switch.

Updated on

The short answer

Do not read Cyrillic through its familar shapes. Read each symbol as a Russian letter. Cyrillic В, V is /v/, Р, R is /r/, and Н, N is /n/. Once those three mappings become automatic, phrases such as Вот метро., Vot metro, Рита в ресторане., Rita v restorane, and Нина в метро., Nina v metro stop looking like a code made from misleading English capitals.

The modern Russian alphabet has 33 letters. You do not need to master all of them before reading your first words. A faster start is to separate letters into three practical groups: shapes whose sound feels familiar, shapes that belong only to Cyrillic, and shapes that look familiar but carry a different sound. This page tackles the third group because it causes the most confident mistakes.

The key habit is simple: see the whole Russian word, retrieve the Russian sound, then read the phrase. A letter’s Latin look is irrelevant.

В, V is /v/, not /b/

Cyrillic В, V has the basic consonant sound /v/. The letter that normally represents /b/ is Б, B. In the phrase below, the first letter of Вот, Vot therefore begins like English “vote”, not “boat”.

Here is the metro.

The phrase means “Here is the metro.” It gives you two useful anchors at once: В, V for /v/ and the internationally recognisable метро, metro. Listen once, then cover the translation and read from the Cyrillic alone.

Р, R is /r/, not /p/

Cyrillic Р, R represents the Russian /r/ sound. The letter for /p/ is П, P. That makes ресторан, restoran a useful bridge word: its meaning is easy to guess, while its first letter forces you to ignore the Latin-looking P shape.

Rita is in the restaurant.

ита в ресторане.

The full sentence is “Rita is in the restaurant.” Russian normally leaves out the present-tense equivalent of “is”, so the short phrase contains no hidden verb to recover. For this exercise, keep your attention on the pronounciation of Р, R at the start of Рита, Rita and ресторане, restorane.

Н, N is /n/, not /h/

Cyrillic Н, N represents /n/. Russian /h/-like sounds are written with other letters, most often Х, Kh in native words. In the name Нина, Nina, the first letter is therefore /n/.

Н sounds like N

This sentence also repeats метро, metro, so only one unfamiliar reading should demand your attention. Repetition is useful here: it leaves enough mental space to make the Н, N to /n/ mapping stick.

A five-second reading routine

When a Russian word looks almost readable in English, slow down instead of speeding up:

  1. Point to each Cyrillic letter without naming its Latin lookalike.
  2. Retrieve the Russian sound, especially for В, V, Р, R, Н, N, С, S, and У, U.
  3. Blend the sounds into the whole word.
  4. Replay the sentence and compare your reading with the speaker.

Do not keep two competing alphabets in your head for long. The goal is to see Р, R and hear /r/ directly, without the intermediate thought “it looks like P”. Practising the letters inside words also keeps recognition and meaning together instead of turning the alphabet into a seperate recital.

Try the three traps once more

The practice below changes the retrieval task each time: sound to letter, letter to sound, then a missing letter inside a word. That small variation is more useful than repeating one alphabet chart from top to bottom.

Quick practice

Read the sound, not the silhouette

Each question isolates one Cyrillic lookalike. Say the sound before you choose the letter.

01Which Cyrillic letter represents the /v/ sound in the first card?
02Which sound begins the Russian word for restaurant in the phrase from the card?
First letter Р · Do not read it as Latin PРита в ресторане.
03Which letter completes the Russian name Nina?
_ина в метро.

  1. ВCyrillic В looks like Latin B, but its basic sound is /v/. The Russian /b/ letter is Б.
  2. /r/Cyrillic Р represents /r/. Its shape is the trap; the sound belongs with Latin R.
  3. НThe missing letter is Cyrillic Н, pronounced /n/. The complete name is Нина.
